The Don Friedemann Memorial Scholarship
The Hartford Players, Ltd. theatrical organization exists not only to bring the best in theatre to our community, but also to promote the arts of the future through scholarships. Each spring, we award scholarships to worthy students who will be pursuing post-secondary degrees in the arts.
2023 Recipients:
Grace Hennen
Music and Business Administration
Grace is a freshman double-majoring in Music and Business Administration at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Since her first musical, Children of Eden with the Hartford Players in 2012, Grace has been involved in all things music. During her time at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School, Grace received various awards in choir, band, and theatre, including the National School Choral Award, Excellence in Theatre Award, and a Jerry Awards nomination for her work as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. She is a part of two college choirs and she accompanies both choirs and soloists for various recitals and performances. In addition, she assists her church, Peace in Hartford, by playing piano and singing for services. She has been a part of many musicals, most recently the Hartford Players production of Hunchback of Notre Dame. Grace hopes to use her love of music to inspire others in the future and would like to thank the Hartford Players for their generous support in this goal.
Mariah Kiefer
Musical Theater
Mariah is a senior at Slinger High School, and plans to attend The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Peck School of the Arts to pursue a BFA in musical theater. Ever since the age of seven, Mariah has been involved in the arts. From her first role as firefly number one in the Schauer Center’s production of the Secret Garden to playing the female lead, Sarah Brown, in her senior musical, Guys and Dolls, at SHS, theater has always been a part of Mariah’s life. Mariah loves to engage with her community through community theater. This past summer Mariah performed in the Hartford Players production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mariah works with the youth, helping as the assistant vocal director for the Slinger Middle School theater program, helping the students find joy in performing and inspiring students to continue with the arts.

Elizabeth Rhinehart
Library Science and Music
Elizabeth is a sophomore studying Piano Performance and English at UW Milwaukee. She hopes to pursue a career as a music librarian and plans to pursue a graduate degree in library science and music. She studies piano with Prof. Elena Abend and has participated in masterclasses with Eli Kalman and Michael Mizrahi in the past year. In addition to participating in the Peck School of the Arts, she is also active in the Honors College and at her church. She currently works at the Golda Meir library during the school year, and at the Jack Russell Memorial Library in Hartford during the summer. Outside of music, she enjoys reading of all kinds, especially fantasy books.
Colette Poree
Art Therapy
Colette Poree is a senior from Slinger High School, and has been involved in the arts since the age of three. From painting, to choir, to dance & musical theatre—Colette shares her love for the arts with all who will listen! Colette works avidly to help out in her community, as well as within her school to promote the arts. Colette’s favorite lead role was her most recent, as “Lily” in SHS’s production of “Anastasia”! In the fall, Colette will be attending Carroll University to major in Art Therapy, and participate in Carroll’s musical theatre program.

Connor Martin
Music Theater
Connor Martin, HUHS class of 2022, will be attending Viterbo University to pursue a BFA in Music Theatre. His love for performing started when he was five years old cast as a munchkin in Hartford Player’s 2009 production of The Wizard of Oz. Other past favorite credits include Lees-McRae Summer Theatre in North Carolina (OLIVER, Oliver Twist), The Fireside Theatre (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Ensemble; MARY POPPINS, Michael Banks; PETER PAN, John Darling), The Palace Theater in the Dells (MARY POPPINS, Michael Banks), Capital City Theatre (GYPSY, Newsboy), and Hartford Union High School (SHREK, Lord Farquaad) in which he won a Jerry Award, Outstanding Lead Performance. Throughout his time at HUHS, he was actively involved with Student Council, Best Buddies, H-Club, FBLA, Forensics (2021 State Champion), Musical, NHS, and Cross Country. In the summer Connor tours with Kids From Wisconsin as a Principal Singer/Dancer

Thank you so much for selecting me to receive this Don Friedemann Memorial Scholarship. It was a wonderful “welcome home” from my first college choir tour, where we were able to share music with several congregations throughout Texas. I am honored and grateful for this financial support to help me continue my education in the arts. With my college education I hope to inspire others in the same way that many of my choir directors and mentors have inspired me.
